THE MEANING OF RECITING THE QUR'AN

Grandpa Ahmed had a habit of reciting few pages of Qur'an every day. His grandson Sayid used to observe his grandpa, when he was reciting. Ahmed asked Sayid to bring a basket of coal and started recitig. When Sayid came back with coal, he decided to ask him about his reciting.

»Grandpa, what is the point of reading from that book, when it is written in arabic. You don't understand a word you read. So why is it so important to you?«

»I will answer your question,« said grandpa. »But first you have to do something for me. I need you to take this basket, fill it full with water and bring it back to me.«

He emptied the basket and went to the nearby river. He filled it with water and went back to Ahmed. But of course the water flew out of the basket as soon as he made few steps. So he filled it again and this time he ran to Ahmed as fast as he can, but still didn't manage to bring any water with him. He told Ahmed about the water always pouring out of the basket and he wanted to use a bucket instead.

»I didn't ask you to bring a bucket of water. I want you to bring me a basket of water.« said Ahmed.

So Sayid tried a few times more, but each time with no luck.

»Grandpa there is no use in doing this. It's not possible to bring water in a basket. And you still didn't answer my question about why you recite so much the Qur'an.«

»My boy!« Ahmed said. »You think your work was pointless, just as you think reciting from the Qur'an is pointless. Yet look at the basket, in which you tried to bring me water. It was all black and dirty from coal that you brought. But thanks to your hard work the water cleaned it and it's now spotless. You see Sayid. Just as water cleaned the basket, the holy Qur'an cleans your soul. Tranquillity and peace settle in your heart.«
